FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.   What is Sentinel?
A.  Sentinel is a tablet containing a mixture of lutenuron and milbemycin oxime that protects your dog from heartworm, hookworm, whipworm, and roundworm and helps control fleas. Sentinel is the only product that controls five different kinds of parasites and leaves no pesticide residue.

Q.  Are there side effects from Sentinel?
A.  Sentinel is safe for your pet when used correctly. Do not use on dogs with pre-existing heartworm infestations and high numbers of circulating microfilariae (juvenile stage), because they may experience shock-like reactions.

Q.   If my pet is on a different heartworm preventative, how do I change to Sentinel?
A.  If Sentinel replaces daily dosing heartworm tablets containing DEC (Diethyl-Carbamazine Citrate), like Filaribits, the first dose must be given within 30 days of the changeover. If Sentinel replaces other monthly heartworm treatment, like Heartguard, simply continue your monthly dosing regime.

Q.  How do I give Sentinel to my Pet?
A.  The Sentinel tablets should be given to your pet once a month, preferably on the same day of each month. Sentinel can be given directly or hidden in your pet's food, since the tablets should be given with a full meal or immediately afterwards.

Q.   What happens if I miss a tablet?
A.  If you miss the 30-day interval by less than seven days, administer Sentinel immediately and resume your monthly dosing schedule. If the interval is longer than seven days consult your veterinarian.

Q.   Can I use Sentinel year round?
A.  Yes. Sentinel is safe to use year round for protection from heartworm, roundworm, whipworms, hookworms, and for flea control.

Q.   Can I use Sentinel on puppies?
A.  Yes. Sentinel is safe for use in puppies over 4 weeks of age. Sentinel has been approved by the FDA and has been tested for safety on over 40 breeds of dogs.

Q.  Does Sentinel kill fleas?
A.  Sentinel does not kill adult fleas; Sentinel contains lufenuron, which inhibits flea egg development. For best results treat your pet with a product designed to kill adult fleas before Sentinel is administered. This will help reduce the flea population.

Q.   Does Sentinel kill ticks?
A.  Although Sentinel stops development of flea eggs, it is not labeled to prevent your pet from getting ticks. It is important to use a tick preventative while your pet is on Sentinel.
